Direct Debit helping drive donations across charity sector

October 24, 2013

Charities across the UK can increase levels of giving and cut costs by taking advantage of Direct Debit, according to Bacs' charity sector specialist Graham Callaghan.

The advice comes at a time when new research from Bacs Payment Schemes Ltd, the organisation behind Direct Debit in the UK, shows that those donating by Direct Debit pledged more on average over the course of the last year - £181, equating to around £15 per month - than any of the other top six most popular methods.

By comparison, the amount pledged through occasional donations by debit and credit card averaged £118, cheque £94, while money given through social events was £64. Donations by standing order (£57), sponsoring someone (£38) and putting money in a collection tin (£20) were further down the list.

The figures, taken from Bacs’ Family Finance Tracker, which looked at the charitable giving habits of 902 adults aged 16+ in GB, found that overall, during the last 12 months, 64% (582 adults) have made one or more charity donation.

Graham, who has vast experience successfully driving Direct Debit sign-up across a range of industries including water, energy and local government, is now urging charities not to miss out on the potential for helping to maximise levels of giving. With Direct Debits also cheaper and far more efficient to process than the likes of cash and cheque, organisations can also benefit from vital cost efficiencies.

Graham Callaghan says: “Encouraging people to sign-up to Direct Debit could increase levels of giving, but it also makes it cheaper and more efficient for charities to process these payments, so it really is win-win.

“The potential for increasing these benefits across the sector is significant and we can provide support to organisations in offering Direct Debit as a preferred payment option. I would encourage charities to get in touch or check-out the support we offer on our website www.bacs.co.uk”
